Is it possible to avoid foot issues?

Some at Active.com think you can.....

"5 Foot Problems You Can Avoid
From blisters to black toenails, a runner's war wounds are endless. Here's how to keep your feet in top shape and enjoy running all year long."

I know that I have tried many solutions to prevent blisters.  Nothing I have tried thus far has totally prevented them.  I am still on the search for the perfect blending of products, shoes, and socks.

What do you do to prevent foot injuries?  Do you wear your "war wounds" proudly?

Gotta run.

Prevention is better than a cure but if you get them pierce and drain early!

But you knew that right!

Believe it or not I've not had a blister in years. I've also not lost a toenail since I changed my shoes.

I run in North Face Arnuva's which have a large toe box and I buy them a size larger than normal - this is to allow for foot swelling, but also to reduce rubbing on the toes. If you do this make sure the shoes are still snug around your midfoot so your feet aren't moving around inside (which will lead to rubbing, friction, heat and then blisters).

The only other advice I'd offer is that if you feel a stone in your shoe, or that you socks have rucked up, deal with it straight away. You should feel the problem before it becomes a problem. You may lose a few seconds in a race, but at least you're giving yourself the best chance of completing it!

Here's a posting of mine on the topic:

I get blisters all the time, but drain them early and they feel better afterwards. The one thing I'm trying to do is get my feet good and rough so the skin gets so thick it doesn't blister as easily.

My favorite is the top right. I'm sorry I just started reading you blog so I don't know what kind of running you do but mine is triathlon training related mostly road. I wear Newton's and they have been the best thing ever.

Sorry I'm a little late here. One of the things I've discovered is that people who get blisters try different things until they no longer have problems, then swear by whatever they did last, though often it's just "time on one's feet" that makes the difference. When I was starting, I got blisters, so I lubed my feet, then wore two pairs of socks, etc., but one day arrived at a race too late to do anything but run. After the race, I found I had no blisters, even though I hadn't done any of the things I usually did; my feet had just toughened up!

I don't know if I am just being too "girly"... but since I've lost both big toenails, I'd like to have smooth feet! lol
